Improving perpections of safety between Lithgow Railway Station and Main Street...

We are partnering with Transport for NSW through the Safer Cities: Her Way 2 program to improve feelings of safety between Lithgow Railway Station and Main Street.

Complete the survey, pin an idea or attend a walkshop to help us understand what changes could help people feel more comfortable, confident and welcome when moving through Lithgow's town centre.

We're particularly encouraging women, girls, gender diverse and LGBTQI+ community members to get involved and share their experiences.

How safe and welcome do you feel walking between Lithgow Railway Station and Main Street during the day, and after dark?

People experience public spaces differently. What feels welcoming, comfortable and easy to navigate for one person may feel very different for someone else. This is because people have diverse needs, abilities, experiences, cultural backgrounds, ages and identities that shape how they interact with and perceive a place. Through this project, we want to better understand how people use, move through and experience the spaces between Lithgow Railway Station, Cook Street Plaza and Main Street, and identify opportunities to improve perceptions of safety and comfort for everyone.

Whether you're a commuter, student, worker, visitor, business owner or local resident, your feedback will help shape future improvements for this important town centre connection.

Project Funding

This project is delivered in partnership between Lithgow City Council and the NSW Government through Transport for NSW's Safer Cities: Her Way 2 program.

The project aims to help improve perceptions of safety in public spaces and transport hub precincts for everyone, particularly women, girls and gender diverse people.

About the Project

The Safe Arrival and Departure Corridor project focuses on the journey between Lithgow Railway Station and Main Street, including Railway Parade, Cook Street Plaza, Eskbank Street and surrounding civic and retail destinations.

As the primary arrival and departure route for commuters, students, visitors and residents, this corridor plays an important role in how people experience Lithgow, including after dark.

This project builds on previous planning work, including Lithgow's Main Street Revitalisation program, and will place community experiences at the centre of future improvements to help improve the overall feeling of welcome and confidence when moving through the area.

The project will use community engagement and co-design activities to ensure future initiatives reflect local experiences, priorities and needs.

Community feedback will help identify initiatives that may include:

• Lighting and visibility
• Care and clear sightlines
• Amenities and accessibility improvements
• Wayfinding and signage
• Colour and public art
• Events and activities

Importantly, specific improvements have not yet been determined. Instead, women, girls, gender diverse people and the wider community will help identify priorities and shape future solutions through surveys, walkshops and co-design activities.

Share your experiences of travelling between Lithgow Railway Station and Main Street. Tell us where you feel comfortable and confident, highlight locations that need improvement, and suggest ideas that could help make the journey more welcoming and easier to navigate. The survey and online map can be completed at any time between now and September 30 and are a great option if you can't attend events in person.

🚶Community Walkshops

Help us explore the journey between Lithgow Railway Station and Main Street in person through a community walkshop. Walkshops are guided walking workshops where participants observe the environment, discuss their feelings of safety and identify opportunities to improve how public spaces feel and function.

Participants will be invited to discuss elements such as lighting, visibility and sightlines, accessibility, comfort and amenity, wayfinding, public art and identity, and overall feelings of safety and welcome. No technical or planning experience is required. We simply want to hear about your lived experience. We're particularly interested in hearing from women, girls, gender diverse and LGBTQI+ community members.

Night Walkshop - Thursday 17 September 2026, 5-7pm

Join us to explore how the corridor feels and functions after dark. This walkshop will help us understand how lighting, visibility, activity and place design influence people's experiences and perceptions of safety. We're particularly interested in hearing from women, girls, gender diverse and LGBTQI+ community members.

Day Walkshop - Saturday 19 September 2026,1-3pm

🙋Co-Design Workshop - 17 October

After gathering community feedback, participants will be invited to help refine and test potential solutions. This workshop will explore findings from surveys, walkshops, mapping activities and other engagement activities to identify priorities and inform future design decisions. This is an opportunity for community members to play an active role in shaping outcomes, not simply commenting on completed designs.
