Lithgow City Council has received a proposal from the Main Street Gardening Group to "make Main Street, Lithgow attractive to tourists and locals, and to strengthen community provide by adding potted colour to the CBD".
The Group proposes to provide hanging baskets for installation on Main Street buildings within the CBD noting that they will "soften then sterile concrete structures, add colour and beauty as well as stimulate shopper happiness and positive energy. The potted colour will make businesses more visual from the street and build pride with shop owners and residents alike".
About the project
Inviting displays such as hanging planters will add vibrant colour to our CBD. Community projects such as this are known to increase foot traffic, attracting both residents and tourists to CBDs, benefiting local businesses.
The Main Street Garden Group will, in collaboration with Council, retailers, businesses and business owners is proposing to purchase materials for up to 50 baskets (at a cost of $40 per basket - $2,000) initially and then stagger purchases over a 12-month period. Starting centrally near the railway entrance opposite Cook Street plaza and then working outwards, the goal is to eventually have handing baskets both sides of Main Street from top to bottom.
How will the hanging baskets be maintained?
The Main Street Gardening Group will create a Team Roster for maintenance and a "Flying Squad" of members to attend to vandalised baskets. Retailers and businesses are also encouraged to 'adopt a basket'.
How do I participate?
Main Street retailers, businesses and business owners are required to register their business using the online registration form below to participate in the program. All registrations will be passed onto the Main Street Garden Group who will liaise with participating businesses regarding the project. The goal is to have hanging baskets on both sides of Main Street from top to bottom.

Businesses in the CBD are invited to register to participate and receive a hanging planter. The planters will be installed and maintained by the small group of community members, the Main Street Gardening Group, although interested businesses are encouraged to "adopt a basket". The Main Street Gardening Group will commence by engaging a tradesman or handyman to install hanging brackets to shop front walls. Liaising with registered business and working bee will be held to assemble the baskets and hang on the brackets.
