The council has received feedback from the Portland community regarding the Portland War Memorial (Cenotaph). Concern has been expressed that the current layout does not allow people to properly interact with the Cenotaph due to limited accessibility (noting at least one reported incident of a person falling during a memorial service) and difficulty reading the names on the memorial.
Funding has been made available in the 2025/26 Operational Plan (p82) and following discussions with the RSL Sub-Branch, Portland Tidy Towns, Portland Men's Shed and the President of the Portland CWA three options are put forward for community consideration (see images showing the concept proposals for the Portland Cenotaph:
Do nothing and retain the current layout of the Cenotaph in front of the Portland CWA.
Proceed with streetscape improvements to the Cenotaph and front of the Portland CWA similar as shown in the AI-generated concept.
Relocate the Cenotaph to Mick Moore Memorial Park across the street, subject to further discussion with the Sub‑Branch.
